This is an authentic Cold War-era Civil Defense "Fallout Shelter" sign. These signs were used in the U.S. during the 1960s to mark locations designated as shelters in case of a nuclear attack. The signs feature the international radiation symbol (trefoil) and the words "FALLOUT SHELTER". They were part of a national program launched by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to identify and mark existing buildings suitable for protection from radioactive fallout.
