This is an authentic Cold War-era Civil Defense "Fallout Shelter" sign. These signs were used in the U.S. during the 1960s to mark locations designated as shelters in case of a nuclear attack. The signs feature the international radiation symbol (trefoil) and the words "FALLOUT SHELTER". They were part of a national program launched by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to identify and mark existing buildings suitable for protection from radioactive fallout. The signs were typically made of aluminum or galvanized steel and measured either 10 by 14 inches or 14 by 20 inches. Original signs issued by the Department of Defense (DOD) or Office of Civil Defense (OCD) have a small line of text at the bottom that reads, "NOT TO BE REPRODUCED OR USED WITHOUT DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PERMISSION".
